Let's get together and talk about hacking. \|_________|
Join the ValpoHacks Slack to chat with fellow hackers. This is our primary "forum" for discussion week-to-week. For the time being in 2020, we have been meeting on Zoom every Thursday as a way to socially distance AND keep in touch. Join the Slack and say 👋 in #general!
July 2020. Meetings are still online via Zoom. For more information, please join our Slack. We will be continuing Zoom meetings, in accordance with local law and general practicality. Likely throughout 2020.
July Meeting Topic: @AdamJohnson will be giving a digital "update" on a very controversial topic: The Valparaiso, Indiana Maker Space. If you have questions, ask him! It's @Cameron's birthday week so he will be unable to hose. But @Miles will hopefully be able to spin up a Zoom. And the link WILL BE IN SLACK, around ~6pm or 7pm on Thursday. Join! It's FREE!
As Valparaiso (and the world) begin to open back up, we have been looking to better communicate small social gatherings where ValpoHacks members will be participating, both online AND in person. Check _this space_ for announcements in the coming weeks.
Valpo Hacks is a group of hackers from Valparaiso, Indiana, who meet regularly to discuss modern computing. We discuss basic computer security, automation, encryption, mobile computing, UNIX, cryptocurrency and other various technical topics. Most meetings include a hands-on presentation or tutorial, followed by general discussion. Meetings are typically held monthly at Figure Eight Brewing. Meeting dates and times are posted on our Meetup.com group.
The term hacker became prevalent in the early 1960s, and was well described by Verna Gehring as "ones who enjoy the intellectual challenge of creatively overcoming and circumventing limitations of programming systems and who tries to extend their capabilities." The term grew in popularity, and today can apply to people with interests in hardware, software, or even non-computing hobbies. For more information, we suggest Eric Steven Raymond's How to Become a Hacker.
The best way to become involved with Valpo Hacks is to join our Meetup.com group, and our Slack chat channel. Our Slack chat stays fairly active and includes many members of the Valparaiso tech community. For invitation, feel free to email valpo_hacks@cameron.software.
People of all ages and backgrounds are invited to join our meetings, the only pre-requisite is that you desire to learn more about hacking.Over the years, we've gotten kinda bad at hosting links/pptz from previous meetings. We apologize and the volunteer responsible has been fired. But if you're looking for an example presentation from one of our numerous previous meet ups, please see the links below.
If you're curious about hacking, or if you enjoyed one of our meetings and want to learn more, we've but together a list of fun and crazy URLs, where you can learn more about hacking!
Still can't get enough hacking in your life? Every meeting, we have a Hacker Book Exchange, where we bring books about computers or hacking to trade. Here are a few good examples of great reads, if you're looking to start your own library.
